What is Aquatic Therapy?

C
ary Physical Therapy partners with Lake Barrington Woods to provide our patients with aquatic therapy. Our aquatic therapy program includes at least one land based session per week to promote functional rehabilitation. The program is supervised by a licensed physical therapist. Aquatic therapy is good for post surgical patients, athletes, chronic pain patients, individuals with arthritis and other orthopedic conditions. The therapeutic temperature and reduction of gravitational forces from the water allow patients to perform exercises which would be much too difficult on land.

Benefits of Aquatic therapy
  • Muscular relaxation
  • Reduced pain sensitivity
  • Decreased muscle spasm
  • Increased ease of joint movement
  • Improved body awareness
  • Improved trunk stability and balance
  • Improved self confidence and morale
  • Improvement of respiratory muscles
  • Reduction of gravitational forces
